America’s Black Neurosis (part one)

The presence of sub-Saharan Africans in the United States has never not been a subject of controversy, and will likely never cease to be one. No-one is indifferent to them, or of the kind of calm opinion about them as about any other group. The left cannot help seeing them not as ordinary citizens, but as a cause to be fought for, or as children to be adopted, guided or used.  The right cannot fully relax while they are granted the privileges of equality, allowed the freedom to wander delinquently into their suburban dreams. The very far-right appear sadistically happy about racial inequality. They wish to see black people on the other side of a wall from themselves, and doubtless to be able to see over that wall, to watch with a grin as the formerly uppity savages attempt to reconstruct what they once took for granted. Even the centrists, for all their professed stillness of mind, enjoy the racial controversy in other ways.

Indeed, the very humanity of black Africans is up for private dispute, even around the loveliest dinner tables. The ‘racism of low expectations’ prevails almost everywhere (if you doubt this, ask your most educated liberal friends for their opinion on the excremental poetry of Maya Angelou, say, or on the violence in Chicago. Anything short of disdain for the first and horrified condemnation of the second can be taken as evidence of a lower standard.)

Despite centuries of discord and moral debate, European-Americans have still to find a way of dealing with the presence of Africans within their society. And so much greater is the severity of this issue in the US that it seems to stem from nationally peculiar causes. Though problems exist everywhere with race and difference, there is simply no comparison between the anti-black racism of Europeans and that of non-black Americans. Something there has become unique.

Go even to 4chan, a bubbling pot of crude tribalism, and you will find Europeans tiring of the anti-black emphasis of those with American flags atop their posts. Reference is made on the Politically Incorrect forum to ‘Mutt’s Law’, a satirical principle holding that the longer a thread, on any topic, grows, the likelier it becomes that a Mutt (American) will refer to black men or interracial sex.

Almost everything that arouses intense dispute in American politics can be sourced back to the presence and status of black people. Universal healthcare, for example, might be accepted as commonsensical by white Americans were the racial profile of their country like that of Iceland. Put another way, if a white American conservative moved to Iceland permanently, it is unlikely they would end up criticising the island’s health system as ‘communism’ and seek to tear it down in the name of ‘liberty’. They would probably prefer it, regarding it simply as kindred people taking care of each other. But America is not Iceland; its taxpayers are far from equal, and so universal healthcare is conceived of as a massive transfer of wealth from whites to non-whites, in particular (and particularly offensively) from whites to blacks.

The gun debate in America, likewise, has a rather obvious racial undertone. Who can really call it a coincidence that gun sales shot up after the election of the first black president in 2008, or that such sales respond more dramatically to BLM protests than to real world overreaches of government authority? Obama was not a radical president. Nothing so interesting. But he wasn’t white. He enjoyed the support of a large non-white coalition. And thus the response.

But why is there such an intense obsession with black people in the US to begin with? Racism is diverse. The US hosts every type imaginable. So why are black Africans still the priority of its unique racial complex?

Part of the explanation derives, as might be anticipated, from the institution of slavery.

When thought about lucidly, there is something odd about loathing a people you have victimised. If a person considers slavery, with its flagellation and branding and rape and coerced reproduction, a natural sympathy should arise for the victim, and nothing but sympathy. Black people were treated horribly by many slave-owners (though by no means all), and the institution is loudly condemned in light of modern ethical standards.

But though there is sympathy for the victims of slavery, a great many Americans, including some of the most sympathetic, nonetheless hold black people in contempt for having submitted to it.

Slavery in the United States shouldn’t have worked. Its unwieldy scale, primitive means of enforcement, extremely lax security and obvious violation of declared national values, should have led swiftly to glorious insurrection. But that didn’t happen. It worked. For four hundred years.

This produced an instinctive disgust for black weakness. The obedience and fearful submission of slaves created a confused hatred of whatever in their nature allowed for such degradation. What is it about them, wondered many, that makes them so submissive? Why aren’t they fighting back?

It is possible to trace from this sentiment much of the later paranoia over blood purity. Who knew just how much of the dreaded blood was required to be remove a man’s will to resist, to nullify his self-respect. One could not be too cautious.

This contempt has survived into the present day. I have seen innumerable online comments angrily chastising modern day black people for their ancestors’ obsequiousness. This would explain a little of why anti-black racism is so different to anti-Asian or anti-Arab or anti-native racism. Unlike in those cases, there is a perverse kind of remorse in the hatred of black people in America.

In Praise of Black People

I’ve just finished reading a lengthy article on the ethno-nationalist website American Renaissance (Jared Taylor’s organisation) entitled ‘What I don’t like about Blacks’. It was written by a Black intellectual named Zora Wheatley and is presented as a polite and self-deprecating rebuke to Jared Taylor’s (uncharacteristically diplomatic) essay the prior month – “What I like about Black People”.

Here are three defining paragraphs from Wheatley’s article:

“The discontent you feel with yourself and blackness as a whole can be crushing. You discover that aside from the tall African tales of Alex Haley, Underground Railroad figures, and peanut proprietors, there’s not much there (in terms of Black historical achievements). And on top of that, these historical footnotes arise from a new world that is leaps and bounds beyond the stone-age existence in which your ancestors were found. As (Black academic James) Baldwin put it, ‘It is quite possible to say that the price a Negro pays for becoming articulate is to find himself, at length, with nothing to be articulate about.’….

“Mr. Taylor finds the way blacks speak English entertaining, and I would agree in part, though most modern black English is so dumb and vulgar that I wouldn’t be surprised if clicks and grunts will be making a comeback….

“One of the things that I don’t like about blacks (is) their tendency to lay claim to the building and resulting greatness of the West. Picking cotton, tilling soil, and whipping up sweet potato pies were helpful and important in their own way, but were nothing like the establishment of private property rights or the implementation of Enlightenment-era ideals in the New World, which guided the nation for generations. It would be akin to a Native American claiming that, because his ancestors shared corn and turkey with early European settlers one fine November day, they are as important as the descendants of those white settlers who would fight the British and build the America in which we live today.”

Though I admire greatly the intellectual detachment and personal bravery it must have taken to say these things about her own ethnic group, I must disagree with Ms Wheatley’s argument entirely.

It is sadly accurate that most Black contributions to history were enabled by contact with Europeans (and their technology), and that before this, Black history was a long and largely blank expanse of time. But since that great encounter with Europe, and the subsequent incorporation of Black people into European culture, Black accomplishments have been multitudinous and often dazzling.

Perhaps the reason racists feel comfortable in denying these achievements is because they are not various and widespread but concentrated in a few particular areas, compact and neat enough to kick under the nearest cupboard and pretend not to have seen them. One can then focus on the map of absences – the absence of a Black Darwin, Brunel, Newton or Shakespeare etc…

But this is incredibly unfair and intellectually dishonest. Every racial group and culture has a speciality – something they do better than anything else. Austrians are better at composing music than they are at writing. English people are better at writing than they are at painting etc… A speciality should never be considered a limitation.

And what are the Black specialities? Well, the obvious starting point is music. Since the abolition of slavery, there has appeared no musical discipline that cannot be traced back to Black innovation. Rock n’ Roll, Jazz, Soul, Blues, Southern Folk, Disco, Hip-Hop, Swing – all of these are Black inventions, and very influential ones at that. They have changed our tastes, fashions and social norms, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. They have all been cheerily received by other races, understood and celebrated by all the varieties of mankind.

In the connected field of entertainment, Black people have also proven sublimely capable. Through their extroversion and wit, African-Americans have conquered the fields of comedy, film and presentation. Every facet of modern Western humour is informed by Black sensibilities. Their urban parlance has penetrated deeply into our vocabulary and can never be excised from it.

And in Sport, Black athleticism inspires the mind and spirit, dazzling, humiliating and surpassing our view of human capability. Through their determination, Blacks have even conquered sporting disciplines for which they have no natural advantage, like golf and tennis. And whatever sports the future may withhold, Black people will surely eventually dominate these too.

I write this in part to clarify my earlier posts about Black demography. We in Europe reserve the right to maintain a cultural balance favourable to our traditions, but this does not (or need not) imply a dislike of Africans themselves. Despite the contemporary plagues of violence and anti-aspirational politics afflicting the Black community, the fact remains that over the last two centuries, this great and gifted race has scaled the peaks of the Western world. Let that never be forgotten.

A Post-White World is Nothing to Desire.

The demographic outlook for ethnic Europeans is dire. That much is generally accepted by most academics and politicians today (even if they do not have the courage to mention it).

This process, when it matures, will split the world into two camps; those are approve of White decline, and those who do not. I would guess (though this is not certain) that people in the former camp will be those currently on the Left, and that the latter category will be staffed by those currently on the Right. Of course, many will defect either side of this divide as the process accelerates, and most of the defections will surely be Whites going Right.

In one way, I’m perfectly neutral about racial demographics. The relative increase in Latinos, Blacks and East-Asians is not something that keeps me awake at night. All of these groups are capable of civilisation, and nobody has presented to me a valid argument that they threaten my life or my aspirations.

In another way, though, I wonder if White decline might unleash the forces of chaos.

White supremacy (though it reverberates in the ear as a bad thing) has many happy consequences. Most of all, it provides what I would call a ‘global referee’ to keep intra-minority bigotries in check.

It’s fair to speculate that if the White race disappeared in a puff of smoke, the global measure of racism would increase, not decrease. Without a universal standard of civilisation, and without the liberal White attitude to ethnic difference, many festering rivalries would explode into life.

A lot of minority folk pretend to eschew racism purely because they want to conform to White standards. But if these standards disappeared, terrible emotions would surely burst out of their restraints.

Chinese would turn on Japanese and vice versa. Mexicans would turn on African-Americans and vice versa. Kurds would turn on Turks and vice versa. Persians would turn on Arabs and vice versa. Japanese would turn on Koreans and vice versa. Dark-skinned Indians would turn on light-skinned Indians and vice versa. Mixed race people would turn on Blacks and vice versa. You get the point…

We would do well to remember that White civilisation was not just the author of slavery, the Holocaust and segregation, but also the first (and as yet only) civilisation to embrace the attitudes of liberalism.

No other culture the world over declares race to be insignificant. The Chinese President doesn’t attend equality seminars with Black Africans. Japanese TV hosts do not lose their jobs for saying the wrong ethnic signifier. These are quirks exclusive to the West and to the White peoples.

Will There Ever be a Black President?

Racial classification in America has long been envied for its complication and absurdity. With roots in slavery and the fierce self-love of Anglo-Saxon agrarians, the American meaning of ‘White’ quickly evolved into something very different from its European sense. Commonly-speaking, one is only ‘White’ in America if one is of 100% pure (non-Spanish speaking) European heritage.

For example, if an American is 9/10ths White and the remainder is Black, the 1/10th Black heritage metaphysically dissolves all other ancestry to produce simply an ‘African-American’. If one is a blue-eyed, blonde-haired Spaniard with roots in Spain’s new world colonies, one is not European any more but ‘Latin’. Meanwhile, an Indian-American from South-West Asia is an ‘Asian-American’ but Arabs from South-West Asia are White-Americans. Follow?

The reason I raise this is because of a complaint I (and most reasonable people) have with the description of Barack Obama as ‘the First Black President’. He isn’t, and the claim that he is offers a false conclusion to a very significant trend of US social development.

Barack Hussein Obama was born to a White mother. In the absence of his father, the half-White Obama was raised by the said White mother. He later attended a multiracial school to which Black people contributed the tiniest demographic, and went on to a prestigious University whose intake was mostly White. He then resurfaced out the other end as a Black man. How does this happen?

Why, given the time and effort his mother (and only his mother) invested in the upbringing of this man, is he identified entirely with the attributes of his absentee father? He’s not even ‘biracial’ in popular tradition, but simply and starkly ‘Black’. His mother, his childhood and hundreds of his ancestors are airbrushed completely from his typology.

Surely a more sensible definition of Obama’s ethnicity would have him not as a Black man with some White heritage, but the reverse. Obama is a White man with some Black heritage.

Obama has little to nothing in common with his sub-Saharan paternal line. Their superstition and poverty couldn’t be more at-odds with the President’s atheistic intelligence, good humour, linguistic skill and (occasional) diplomatic grace. On the other hand, Obama would be readily suited to his maternal ancestors. Should they manage to get over the unseasoned bigotries of appearance, Obama would find along his Irish line, many people similar in character to himself, stretching back many centuries.

The question of whether America is ready for a Black President is thus still an open question. My guess would be no. One can hardly recall the candidacy of Herman Cain for the Republican nominee without smiling, and there seems to be no other examples forthcoming.

There is nevertheless a very bright hope for a second non-White President, and that is the brilliant Dr. Condoleezza Rice. The former Secretary of State is a woman of great qualification and  – should she contest and win an election – would likely provide a far superior regime to that presently enthroned.

Egalitarianism: The Future of an Illusion.

This week I was browsing the website Vdare.com on my mobile phone and chanced upon a link to an article by the writer John Derbyshire. You may never have heard his name before, but there’s a slight chance you may have heard of one of his more controversial articles: ‘The Talk: Nonblack Version’. This particular piece has now passed into the political-correctors hall of shame, alongside cultural events like the The Bell Curve, Mein Kampf, and Race, Evolution and Behaviour.

I’ll put a link to the original article at the close of this one, but in case you don’t fancy reading it, I’ll summarise it here. ‘The Talk’ is a phrase apparently common among Black parents in the United States. It denotes the conversation they must inevitably have with their growing children about the issue of race, and especially about White racism.

Somewhat indignant about this, Mr Derbyshire took to writing a White version of ‘The Talk’ in which the reader is to imagine the words being spoken to a young White youth instead of a Black one.

Whilst the Black version of ‘The Talk’ is imagined to typically consist of dark and exaggerated warnings about the workings of the evil White community, Derbyshire’s inverts this and cautions the hypothetical youth against the danger of such things as wandering into Black areas at night, or stopping to listen when ‘accosted in the street by a Black’, or of the gap in intelligence between the two races….

You don’t need me to tell you which of those examples became the most controversial.

The issue of Race and Intelligence is apparently destined never to be settled. One cannot even raise it without risk to ones reputation or career. Scientists, including those in the relevant fields, are all too keen to change the subject when asked about it, and few pursue studies of the issue, (if they do, the final papers are laden with firefighting qualifications before and afterward.)

As for me, I like controversy, so it’ll do me no harm to talk about such matters here.

Are the races generally equal in cognitive ability? No. Of course they aren’t. But then nobody really believes that they are. Social manners dictate that we pretend they are in public, but in private, everyone of every racial background knows there are wild intellectual distances between the ethnic groups. And it isn’t just evident on IQ tests, but can be seen in everyday life too.

Just the other week I was sitting in a fast-food restaurant in Hammersmith when the table next to mine was suddenly leapt upon by a group of about 6 Black youths. They were, in appearance, aged around 18 to twentysomething years old, and were riotously trying to hold a six-way conversation with each other.

I’d already finished my ‘meal’, and was just waiting to stand and leave, but I was feeling lazy and so I sat for a few more minutes and listened to these people talk……

What I find most curious is that nobody else finds the conversations these people have curious. They aren’t like those held by any other ethnic type. No member of the group ever had the chance to complete a sentence. Each guy just kept shouting whenever anything like silence emerged from between the shouts of the others. Since words weren’t getting through, some of them started to make extended noises in order to bring the centre of gravity over to them. One of them kept going “Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh……Ohhhhhhhhhhh..Ohhhhhhh.” Another tried with “Whoaaahhh…Whoaahh.”. Another kept repeating “Listen but, listen but, listen but….”

They carried on like this, with each obstructing the communication of the other for about five minutes. At this point I had to leave as one of them, his mouth full, became so enthused by his enjoyment of the food that he commenced to dancing ecstatically between the tables.

I don’t think it’s honest to say that I find this a shared behaviour identical in portion within all ethnic groups. I would be truly shocked if a group of British-born Chinese, Jewish, Turkish, Arabic, Hispanic or Indian youths, even school-kids, behaved in that way in public.

But then perhaps the fault here is my own. You might justly ask why haven’t I been shocked before at the bizarre behaviour of young Black men and women? It hasn’t been my liberalism or cowardice. A more probable reason is captured by the phrase “the racism of low expectations’.

If I or society truly believe that races are equal, then should we not be free to confront those crazy youths and bar them from public places? Should we not be allowed to ask for social services to investigate whether those youths are retarded and need greater supervision? And if not, why not?

The answer is that we expect nothing more from them. Or at least, that we aren’t surprised by their behaviour, which amounts to the same thing.

We put off thinking about these things, because to think about these things can be painful.

For me more than others. I do not self-identify as ‘White’, although much of my ancestry is European. I have other infusions which conspire to give me a Latin complexion. My skin is fair, but I wouldn’t call it ‘White’. More than this, the word ‘White’ means nothing by-itself. I self-identify rather as English. But then, my endorsement of the civic-nationalist argument does not cancel out my awareness of  race. True, I’d rather not think about it at all. It dehumanises people to place them in categories, and it goes against my liberal instincts too. But if we adopt full colour-blindness, I’m scared about where my England will end up.

And how far can society actually go before it is forced to acknowledge racial truths? In America, the birthplace of modern multi-racial democracy, the conversation may have to be had sooner even than in Europe.

The city of Detroit, Michigan is for White, race-conscious Americans, a terrifying prophecy of the future. Historically this city was a Germanic, mostly-White, car-making boom-town. After the great-migrations of African-Americans from the South, the white population fled, first to one end of the city, then, after a massive race-riot, to the suburbs around the city and finally after a second race-riot, began to leave the whole metropolitan area.

Detroit is now almost entirely Black, and has become the most dangerous, violent, and deprived city in North America. The residential areas have fallen into third-world condition. Abandoned houses stand next to burned-out houses, closed hardware stores next to blasted and looted ones.

Americans deep-down, know why this has happened. In public, they will tell you it is because of the collapse of the local car-making industry, but the local car-making industry did not support the entire civilised spirit of the city any more than banking supports New York or London. Remove financial services from London and you still have a thriving economic force based around other services, construction and the arts. The same is true of Los Angeles, Paris, Milan and Berlin. No ‘city’ depends on one industry. A town maybe, but not a city.

In truth, the car-making industry was the last White refugee from Detroit. The cars are still being made, but somewhere else now. With White and Asian-American economic talent gone, the city is going quickly rotten. Gangs are taking over. There are running gun-battles echoing around the feet of skyscrapers.

Could this be the American future? Quite plausibly.

But if this is a disease I would hate to see it cured fully. Multi-racialism is not just a fact of life (and of modernity) but a salient fact of the world as it is. There are more people in the world than Europeans. Many non-Europeans have as much or more to offer.

Let there be no confusion – blind egalitarianism does not only mug White people. It also mugs other races of the right to be proud of their superiorities.

Returning to end where we began, I genuinely think there may be such a thing as an ‘optimum IQ’ – that is, an IQ that is best suited to life on planet earth and which is best capable of fulfilling the duties of reproduction, civilization and the creation of public happiness. I don’t believe such an IQ is typical at Harvard or Oxford. Extremely high intelligence is like an untethered helium balloon lifting one away from the vital plane of real existence.  In places like Scandinavia, the natives have some of the highest IQs in the world. The same is true of Japan. But these societies are at the end of their history. Nothing of interest happens anymore. The birth-rate is through the floor.

The music, art and babies of the future are being made by those who still occupy the lower, dirtier but more vital world.
