The debate over gun ownership has dominated the politics of the United States for over 20 years. No Presidential candidate can afford to ignore it. The Media covers it obsessively. After abortion, it provokes more demonstrations than any other issue.
The American Left (and much of the centre) support the Europeanisation of US firearm laws – in other words, the restriction of guns to security and military use. The political Right, with a passion many find confusing, see the right to keep and bear arms as an integral part of American democracy – and the attempt to restrict it as an omen of impending dictatorship.
That last anxiety in particular must be pondered if one wishes to understand the spirit of America. For over 300 years, the Patriotic Right have argued that American democracy is vulnerable to abolition by a tyrannical elite, and that such a regime can only be effectively resisted by an armed population.
As the commentator Glenn Beck put it in his recent book Control: The Truth About Guns – “If we continue to stand up for our rights, none of us alive today will ever have to pick up a weapon against our government. The bad news is that if those rights are watered down or taken away, the risk of tyranny will increase with each passing generation.”
For a long time, like most Europeans, I found this American belief in the importance of firearms absurd. But the more I have reflected upon it, the more suspicious I find the refusal of our own government to bestow the same liberty.
While it’s true that a real totalitarian regime could not be overthrown by civil militias armed with semi-automatic weapons, the general populace, so equipped and working in concert, could surely resist arrest, molestation or abuse by that regime.
When Nazi henchmen jackbooted their way through German suburbs to capture Communists, Jews and democrats, they were cheerful and fearless from the certainty their prey was unarmed. Had the general population been equipped to the extent Americans are today, communities could have disrupted the process to such a degree that state policy may have been altered.
Had SS troops been killed or injured by the dozen as they sought to round up Jewish families, the situation might have arisen in which the groups who wished (anyway) to rebel finally found the occasion to try.
Just like that decisive moment when a schoolyard bully is enfeebled in front of his victim by another (stronger) child, thus leading to the collapse of the bully-victim relationship, in a totalitarian society a moment of state weakness can be fatally provocative. That is why if the North Korean regime (or any other regime like it) ever collapses, it will be the result of the people losing respect for the state, rather than because the state weakens in its systemic design.
You cannot respect a state whose enforcers run from your own bullets, whose bodies line the street having tried to line it with the bodies of your family. Little victories lead naturally onto bigger ones.
So the next time you hear Americans link gun ownership to the maintenance of liberty, try to empathise with them. You may even see your own security in a different, rather more horrifying light.

Very interesting and thought provoking post. My dad used to keep guns. Mostly for shooting rabbits, he would eat them. But nice to know they were in the house. Just in case. I think handguns were done away with after the Dunblane massacre. The Americans relationship with guns is very different. They truly believe that guns are their right. As a means of personal protection. The gun is a great leveler. I am of the belief that a civil war is on it’s way. We’ve already seen the opening skirmishes. Once they have the numbers, which isn’t that far away, the Muslims will openly start attacking us. And then we will all wish our constitution allowed us to own guns. Incidentally – I would welcome your thoughts on civil war. Will it happen? Or not? What will it look like?

I think a civil war in this country would look (at first) like the riots in 2011 – lots of low-level crime and casual violence. What I think would be different to 2011 is that both sides would be ideologically (not economically) motivated and so the disorder would fuel itself in a cycle. Every non-Muslim killed will create multiple avengers from his community. The same the other way around. An endless game of tit-for-tat, eventually leading to a Northern Irish-style stand-off. The decisive element will be the State.
If we had guns, it would make Islamisation by force impossible. It would also make for a better (more equal) relationship between people and government.

As an ex-European currently living in the States, I have to say that sounds like an extremely bleak vision of Europe’s future. I hope it doesn’t come to this.
Over the years, I have grown to respect and appreciate the American idea of being able to defend yourself with firearms. Just keep in mind that you then have to deal with the inevitable consequences of things like mass school shootings–since crazies can get the guns, too.

There are certainly downsides to liberal gun laws. but I believe these are outweighed by the positives. I intend to get to America myself one of these days. I shall buy a firearm with pride.

Cj aka Eldersofzyklon is an anti-semitic website that is reposting your work. If I were you I would block this garbage from posting. Take a look at it. Sickening beyond belief. He or she is working very hard to drag your name and blog through the mud. Just a heads up.

Thanks for the heads-up. I’m not sure how to stop someone reposting material. I’d probably have to get rid of the share mechanism entirely, and I don’t want to do that.
Just so any visitor to this site understands – I believe that Jews have a very important role to play in the Western resistance to Jihad. I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a racist. I am not a fascist.

I read the comments on the blog about Neo-colonisation and then checked out the zyklon (or whatever) blog and it’s a mess. It’s worse than left wing conspiracies of Jews running the world by leftists. It hates all Semites (old definition a la Assad), and blacks and probably more. There is no point in debate with said author. I like that you are leaving it up there though.

I try not to censor posts. The only posts I disallow are those with ad hominem attacks on myself. I don’t mind attacks on my work or on my reasoning, but things like “You racist piece of s***!” don’t help anyone.

There is nothing to debate with this frothing at the mouth nazi. You can block him from posting here but can do little to stop him from copying and pasting elsewhere. I do think it will have an effect on your credibility if he is using your material on that site. Have you looked at it? Appalling in every way. A regular hate fest that helps no one. Sort of a mega troll entity. I recommend keeping his comments off of here and reporting the site. He’s an ignorant nut case who is trying to co-opt your efforts and clearly revels in the attention.

Just looking at it now. It’s unpleasant.

I was able to register a complaint with WordPress about this. There is the question about infringing on one’s copyright. I expect little from WordPress but perhaps if they get enough complaints (and why shouldn’t they?) then maybe just maybe it will be pulled. I agree with you on freedom of speech and most people of this sort end up hanging themselves on their own words.

DTMW – i looked at that site too, and if you keep getting reposted by them like that, it might damage the reputation of your blog here, i don’t know. whether that’s their intention or not, who knows. guilt by association is not fair or welcome. your blog is open-minded and helps people to have a rational conversation.
